ANNOUNCEMENTS:
§  There will be a “tab” drive in honor of Jazmyne Gallosa and in memory of Jacquelyn Salcido.  The tabs will be donated to the to the Ronald McDonald House in Albuquerque.  Also, to help Jazmyne with medical expenses we are asking for aluminum cans that will be sold to recycling and donated to her medical account.  Please give your tabs to any teacher on campus and aluminum cans to Mrs. Fierro, Mrs. Orosco, Mr. Lozano, or Mrs. Grove.
§  Fall sport athletes ONLY may pick up your athletic parking passes in the Activities Office.  You may park along the gate after lunch time only.  You cannot park there in the morning.
§  There will be a meeting during lunch time on Tuesday, August 24th in room 44 with Mr. Sherwood and Mr. Edington for those students interested in MESA, Supercomputing Challenge, BEST Robotics, Science Fair, Botball, RoboRAVE, FIRST Robotics, and Science Olympiad.
§  SWNM State Fair Queen packets can be picked up the front office with Mrs. Harrison for those that are interested in running for Fair Queen.
§  Business Professionals of America will meet on Thursday, August 26th during lunch in Room 66 in the West Annex/Main Campus. Students interested in learning more about careers in business and technology should attend. Students compete at the regional, state and national level. This year nationals will be held in Washington, D.C.! There are many competitive events to choose from in the areas of Technology, Finance, Management, Marketing and Administrative Support. Last year our Web Site Design team placed first at state. For more information about BPA contact Ms. Almanza or Mrs. Orosco. You may also want to take a look at the national site at www.bpa.org.
§  The track at the football field is closed this week for maintenance.
§  The soccer field is closed during lunch time.  Also, students are not allowed to sit in vehicles during lunch time.
§  Students that took summer dual credit classes need to turn in their books to the Main Building front office or to Mrs. Ellis in the Guidance Office at the Main Building as well.
§  There will be a National History Day meeting in room 59 in the West Annex next Friday, August 27th.  Bring your lunch.

DATA: 2009-2010 9th, 10th, and 11th graders:
You increased on your short cycle assessment math scores by +4.4 points and your short cycle assessment reading scores by +7.3 points! We have to continue working, but we are on the right track! Great Job!
 
Our AYP results:
 
DHS met AYP in the Caucasian subgroup in both Reading and Math. We met AYP in Reading in the following subgroups via safe harbor: All Students, Hispanic and Economically Disadvantaged.
 
Significant gains were made in Math by the following subgroups: All Students (+7.41), Caucasian (+16.26), Hispanic (+7.98), Economically Disadvantaged (+7.41) and Students with Disabilities (+4.81).
 
Significant gains were made in Reading in the following subgroups: All Students (+9.54), Caucasian (+7.14), Hispanic (+11.89) and Economically Disadvantaged (+9.54). In the Students with Disabilities subgroup, we tripled the score in Math and the Reading score was the highest in the district.  Gains were made by our English Language Learner subgroup in Reading (+1.12).
 
Deming High School’s graduation rate was 78.7% which was a growth of 2.7% from last year.

SENIORS- Information from Mr. Tapia-
-          August 27th – Recruiter for the U.S. Air Force will be available in the Main Campus front lobby during lunch to meet with Juniors and Seniors.
-          September 8th – Recruiter from the UNM C.A.M.P. (College Assistance Migrant Program) will be here on this day @ 8:30 in the morning in Main Campus Library.  This recruiter is here to help our students who themselves or their parents have been employed as a seasonal or migrant farm workers get money for college.
-          September 9th – Recruiter from DACC (Dona Ana Community College) will be here @ 8:30 in the morning in Main Campus Library to meet with seniors about attending DACC.
-          There will be a sign up sheet posted outside my office for students who wish to be excused to meet with any all recruiters college or military.
-          October 23rd – First ACT test date offered here at Deming High School.  Students will need to register by September 17th in order to meet regular deadline.  ACT Packets and test information can be picked up at guidance office.
-          NMHSCE (New Mexico High School Competency Exam) will be given during the last part of September or first part of October.  All seniors still needing all or some parts of this test will need to test at this time.  A second chance for those still needing parts will also be given either in January or February.  All seniors must pass all parts of this test in order to be considered a graduate of DHS.
-          Credit recovery is available for seniors who are behind credits and all seniors are encouraged to meet with Mr. Tapia to verify credits and possible credit recovery.
-          Lucy Veleta will working on the “Counselors Corner” to update information in regards to scholarships, recruiters or any other student information as it becomes available.  She is also available to help with FAFSA (financial aid forms) when it becomes time to do this.
-          Seniors who are college bound are asked to encourage their parents to file their income tax ASAP this year so that FAFSA can be filled out in a timely manner.  Students should be applying for financial aid ASAP after January 1st but before March 1st.
